It wasn't until today, when I noticed the pink and red blooms outside Cory's home, that I realized Spring was here. They seemed to have blossomed overnight. Even though it was cold and stormy, I couldn't help but snatch up my camera, venture outside and capture the pops of color that were existing amongst the grey of the day.

Tiny Treasures in Shades of Black and White

Happy Valentine's Day everyone (and happy 152nd birthday Oregon)! I have always loved Valentine's Day because I see it as a day to tell everyone just how much you love them. Cory and I conducted our own little Valentine's Day photo shoot for this occasion. See it here!

Last year on Tiny Treasures, I wrote all about the history of Valentine's Day and I shared photos from the Tiny Treasures Group that all had to do with love! This year I decided to focus specifically on hearts.

The Table and Chairs Project

Are you on Flickr? Have you heard of the Table & Chairs Project? If you have answered no to either of these questions, I have to say that you are seriously missing out. The Tables and Chairs Project was created by Machel Spence, a supremely talented, creative and kind hearted nature photographer whose love of capturing nature's tiny treasures is undeniable. Seriously, just check out her lovely Flickrstream.

Table & Chairs started when Machel had a wonderful idea to photograph a teeny tiny table and chairs set belonging to her daughter, India, and then send it around to her Flickr contacts and see how they would photograph it. It's been all over the country including (but not limited to) Washington, Vermont, Texas, Mississippi and finally into my hands here in Oregon. I had so much fun photographing this lovely set! You don't really understand how tiny it is until it's in your hands. We had our first taste of snow so I knew I had to get a shot of the Table and Chairs in it. I also took a picture as an ode to Machel's faboulous bokeh shots. My boyfriend even got in on the action and took a few shots of his own. Do you see the tiny ant that is in focus in the bottom right picture!!? I just love it!

Once we were finished taking photos of the precious set, I was instructed by Machel to send the set off to San Fransisco, California to the next contact on the list. The contact just so happened to be Steve Brison and his wife Laura. Steve is actually a Flickr contact of mine who's clever photostream and stories keep me endlessly entertained. I love it when I am reminded how small a world we live.

Christmas in the Air

During the month of December, I am overjoyed at the site off all the beautiful lights and decorations that can be seen all over the place: in storefronts, on sidewalks and lining people's mantles. Cory's grandmother gave us these darling Santa and Mrs. Claus salt and pepper shakers. They have been in her family for years and she thought we should have them. And would you believe that she didn't even know that I collect kissing salt and pepper shakers! I guess it was all meant to be. Christmas is now over and life is already settling into it's normal ebb and flow but I wanted to share a bit of joy from our Tiny Treasure members that I witnessed over this holiday season.

Second Spring...

Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, I have always been fortunate to experience Fall year after year. My heart skips a beat as a see the seasons changing right before my eyes. During September, October and November, the once green leaves of spring and summer alter their appearance and transform before our eyes into glowing oranges, brilliant ochres, fiery crimsons, and deep, rich browns.

I don't know about you, but every year I look forward to seeing pumpkins everywhere I turn: piled in grocery store aisles and sitting on porches carved up into Jack-O-Lanterns. I eagerly await biting into pumpkin pies, muffins, and bread. I even have visions of pumpkin lattes dancing in my head. I can't wait to head off to the pumpkin patch and look out over a sea of bright orange pumpkins (not to mention the hot apple cider, hay rides, and corn mazes)!!

Treasures of the Heart

Most of us know the old adage, “April showers bring May flowers.” In 1557 a gentleman by the name of Thomas Tusser compiled a collection of writings he called "A Hundred Good Points of Husbandry." In the April Husbandry section he wrote,"Sweet April showers do spring May flowers." This poem represents many things. The coming rain and sunshine make flowers grow and spring to life during these months. The most unpleasant of things can bring about pure joy. I believe that is something we face daily: getting through the hardships of life, to grow together and as individuals, and to face the beauty after the storm.

May is also a time in which we celebrate our mothers. The traditional practice of honoring Motherhood is rooted in antiquity; societies tended to celebrate Goddesses and symbols rather than actual Mothers. Only in the past few centuries did celebrations of Motherhood develop a decidedly human focus. Now, on Mother's day, it is common for Mothers to be lavished with presents (flowers being an extremely popular choice) and special attention from their families, friends and loved ones. This year I gave my mother a bag full of old fashioned candies (including Boston Baked Beans, Chico Sticks, Wax Bottles, Mars Bars, Abba-Zabba Bars) to remind her of when I was born. She always tells me stories about how she was addicted to Snickers and Abba-Zabba Bars when she was pregnant with me. Cory and I were walking around downtown Portland's much talked about 23rd Street when we came across "Northwest Sweets." It's new to the area so we had never been inside before. It's filled with old fashioned candies and confections made by the owner (I highly recommend the Buddha's delight caramels... DELICIOUS).

Another flower filled event that to look forward to is the Woodburn Tulip Festival at the Wooden Shoe Tulip farm here in Oregon. My grandparents live in Woodburn and I have been seeing an Acupuncturist/Chiropractor in the area and saw all these signs that the festival was taking place. I told Cory that we might as well go after one of my appointments and take some pictures before it came to a close for the year. We were blown away at the remarkable beauty before us. It was a sea full of tiny treasures. I couldn't believe I had lived so close to such a gorgeous place my entire life and had never been before. I can't wait for next year!

Easter Spells Out Beauty...

I remember when I was a little girl, I would wake up early on Easter morning and wander out into the living room to discover a new Easter bonnet, tights and dress to wear to church and an Easter basket filled with rabbit and egg shaped chocolates, marshmallow Peeps, and other tiny treats (one year my parents even surprised my brother and I with new bikes (mine had silver streamers coming out of each handle and a pink basket with Snoopy on the front)). After church we would go to my Grandparents' house (my dad's parents) where there would be more Easter baskets waiting for my cousins and me, an Easter egg hunt in the backyard, and a dinner of honey-baked ham, potatoes gratin, and buttered rolls.

I'm older now and my parents no longer indulge my brother and me with Easter treats. I no longer get new white tights or a basket filled with my weight in sugar. But we still spend the holiday with my dad's side of the family (usually at my Aunt Connie and Uncle Jeff's home instead of at my Grandparents' home) and enjoy our traditional feast.

This year, Cory and I were both a bit under the weather so we were unsure if we were going to be able to participate in this years celebration. But we decided to put on our happy faces and give it a go. I'm so glad we did. We got to help hide the candy-filled eggs and watch the mostly smiling faces of my younger cousins as they raced to find the treats that the "Easter Bunny" hid for them (sometimes there are tears and fights due to one finding more eggs than the other, which, in a way, is traditional too). My cousin Maya even made me a special gift (a pillow that she picked out the fabric for and sewed all by herself specifically for me!) that I will treasure always. She will also create drawings and then run up to her mom and ask,"Is this as good as Jade did at my age? (I made all the artwork that hangs in her room and in her brother's room and their mom and dad also display a few of my paintings in their dining room so she knows how much I love making art). My cousin Alex raced up to me as soon as I entered the house and gave me a massive hug and was delighted that we both were sporting a fauxhawk hairdo. It's such a blessing to know that my younger cousins look up to me and love me so much, especially since I don't get to see them nearly as much as I would like to.

Of course, it's a holiday, so Cory and I baked cupcakes and dressed up (it has become part of our tradition that just him and I share).

The exact origins of this religious feast day's name are unknown. Some sources say that the word Easter is derived from Eostre (also know as Ostara), a Teutonic (Germanic peoples) goddess of spring and fertility. Other accounts trace Easter to the Latin term hebdomada alba, or white week, an ancient reference to Easter week and the white clothing donned by people who were baptized during that time.

The Bible doesn't mention a long-eared, short-tailed creature who delivers decorated eggs to children on Easter Sunday, nevertheless, the Easter bunny has become a prominent symbol of the holiday. The exact origins of this mythical mammal are unclear, but rabbits, known to be prolific procreators, are an ancient symbol of fertility and new life. Some sources believe the Easter bunny first arrived in America in the 1700s with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and transported their tradition of an egg-laying hare called "Osterhase" or "Oschter Haws." Their children made nests in which this creature could lay its colored eggs. Eventually, the custom spread across the U.S. and the fabled rabbit's Easter morning deliveries expanded to include chocolate and other types of candy and gifts in decorated baskets in lieu of nests.

Eggs have long been associated with Easter as a symbol of new life and Jesus' resurrection. Decorating eggs for Easter is a tradition that dates back to at least the 13th century. One explanation for this custom is that eggs were formerly a forbidden food during the Lent, so people would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration.

Did you know that Easter is the second best-selling candy holiday in America after Halloween? Among the most popular sweet treats associated with this day are chocolate eggs, which date back to early 19th century Europe. Another egg-shaped candy, the jelly bean, became associated with Easter in the 1930s (the jelly bean's origins reportedly date all the way back to a Biblical-era concoction called a Turkish Delight). For the past decade, the top-selling non-chocolate Easter candy has been the marshmallow Peep (the original one was the yellow chick).

Spring Arose...

*Sigh*... Spring. So many things to experience and look forward to during this cheerful season.

The sun comes out of hiding and begins to warm our faces once again. The first official day of Spring (also known as the Vernal Equinox) is on March 20. It is the point at which the sun crosses the celestial equator from south to north. This signals the beginning of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. It has long been a significant event in the lives of agricultural peoples as it symbolizes nature's regeneration, fertility, growth and bounty. The word equinox comes from Latin and means "equal night". On this day, night and day each last twelve hours.

To pagans it's a time for joy called forth by the resurrection of the "Light of the World" (sun god) from the underworld of the winter, from where he arose to join his goddess Eostre.

Eggs begin to hatch. Eggs play an important role in festivities throughout the world. According to folklore, the vernal equinox is the one time of the year that eggs can be stood on end. Earth and nature are said to be in harmony if an egg can be balanced on its end during the equinox, at the very point in time, when day and night are also in balance. People are preparing for Easter (be prepared for a post on this holiday next month) and part of the celebration includes dyeing and decorating eggs.They even color eggs in Iran to celebrate the Spring. Z Budapest in Grandmother of Time says that eggs were dyed red (the color of life) on the Festival of Astarte (March 17). The beautifully decorated eggs from the Ukraine (pysanky) are covered with magical symbols for protection, fertility, wisdom, strength and other qualities. They are given as gifts and used as charms.

Flowers begin to bloom. Seeds are like eggs: while eggs contain the promise of new animal life, seeds hold the potential of a new plant. In ancient Italy during the Spring, women planted gardens of Adonis. They filled urns with grain seeds, kept the in the dark and watered them every two days. This custom persists in Sicily. Women plant seeds of grains — lentils, fennel, lettuce or flowers — in baskets and pots. When they sprout, the stalks are tied with red ribbons and the gardens are placed on graves on Good Friday. They symbolize the triumph of life over death. In England, a superstition connected with flowers relied upon finding the first bloom of the season. If one found the first flower of Spring on a Monday, it was good fortune. If found on a Tuesday, one's greatest attempts would be successful. On Wednesday, it denoted marriage, Thursday, a warning of small profits, Friday, wealth, Saturday misfortune and Sunday indicated luck for many weeks to come. The type of flower found also determined the outcome. Once the species of flower was determined--daisy, buttercup, lily, etc.--one used the initial of that flower to see who would be interested in them in the coming year. Thus, if a young lady found a Daisy, someone whose name started with a 'D' would soon begin to court her.

People are preparing for Easter (be prepared for a post on this holiday next month). Lent is observed. Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. In its early days, meat, butter and eggs were stricken from the diet, a carryover from medieval times. Before improved food storage, a pantry's stores were often lean after a long winter. Thus, what had been a necessary fast of sorts, became church law. With Lent being a time of fast, other things are forbidden also. Sexual relations and wedding ceremonies were taboo before the Reformation, thus resulting in a superstition that carried well into the 19th century that it was bad luck to marry during Lent.

Spring is also a time for Spring Cleaning. It has been suggested that the origins of spring cleaning date back to the Iranian Norouz, the Persian New Year, which falls on the first day of Spring. Iranians continue the practice of "khooneh tekouni" which literally means "shaking the house" just before the new year. Another possibility of the origin of spring cleaning can be traced to the ancient Jewish practice of thoroughly cleansing the home in anticipation of the spring-time holiday of Passover. In remembrance of the Jews' escape from Egypt following their captivity there, the eight-day holiday consists of a strict prohibition against eating anything which may have been leavened. Jews are not only supposed to refrain from leavened foodstuffs but they are also expressly commanded to rid their homes of even small remnants of chametz for the length of the holiday. For the past 3,500 years, observant Jews have conducted a thorough "spring cleaning" of the house, followed by a traditional hunt for chametz crumbs by candlelight on the evening before the holiday begins. During the 19th century in America, prior to the advent of the vacuum cleaner, March was often the best time for dusting because it was getting warm enough to open windows and doors (but not warm enough for insects to be a problem), and the high winds could carry the dust out of the house. For the same reason, modern rural households often use the month of March for cleaning projects involving the use of chemical products which generate fumes.

In many traditions, Spring is the start of the New Year. The Roman year began on the ides of March (15th). The astrological year begins on the equinox when the moon moves into the first sign of the Zodiac, Aries, the Ram. The Vernal Equinox used to be considered the beginning of the Pagan New Year. The Greek God Ares is equivalent to the Roman Mars for whom the month of March is named. Between the 12th century and 1752, March 25th was the day the year changed in England and Ireland. In China, the Spring Festival is also known as Chinese New Year.

Love is Life

Can you feel it? The Love!? I know I sure do and hopefully you do too :)

Every February 14, across the country, husbands are scrambling to stores in order to pick up chocolates in heart shaped boxes to give to their wives, mothers are baking and decorating treats with their children, cynics are wearing black and popping every heart shaped balloon in sight, children are running around their classrooms in sugar highs handing out valentines to their classmates, boyfriends stealing kisses from their girlfriends while out on romantic, candlelit dinners... All in the name of Valentine's Day...

But what is Valentine's Day? Who is this Saint Valentine and why do we celebrate this holiday in the ways that we do? The history of Valentine's Day (and its patron saint) is shrouded in mystery. We do know however that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains both Christian and ancient Roman traditions.

One legend states that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men (his would-be soldiers). Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and performed marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

According to another legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl (who may have been his jailer's daughter ) who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed "From your Valentine."

Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is still cloudy, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and romantic figure.

While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial, others believe it's celebrated in February because in ancient Rome, February was the official beginning of spring and was considered a time for purification.

An estimated one billion Valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine's Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year, the first one being Christmas with 2.6 billion.

The oldest known Valentine card still in existence today was a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. The greeting, which was written in 1415, is part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England. Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois.

In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was very common for friends and lovers if various social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. The first commercial Valentine's Day greeting cards produced in the U.S. were created in the 1840s by Esther A. Howland. Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine, made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as "scrap".

Like I said in the post "Gratitude is the Memory of the Heart," I am someone who believes that you should love those that are special to you everyday. There is no need to create a holiday just to give you the excuse to tell someone that you love and appreciate them and surround them with chocolates and flowers. I tell my sweetie that I love him everyday and I buy him gifts far too often than I probably should...

But, since this holiday does exist, why not celebrate it and enjoy it?

To me, birthdays are a wonderful thing: it is an opportunity to show that person how grateful you are that they are in the world. It is your chance to give them plenty of hugs and kisses... fill them up with frosting... shower them with love and attention... write them a lovely card... embarrass them by bringing up stories about their adolescence, sing them "Happy Birthday" and force them to make wishes and blow out candles, make them carry around over sized balloons while wearing a birthday hat, and give them gifts you knew would brighten their day.

Today marks my 23rd year on this earth. I feel young and I feel old all at once. I look back on my life and think about how much I've accomplished and how many things I have overcome and then I look forward and realize how much life I still have left to live... how many things I have to look forward too... how many hardships I have yet to overcome... I am ready for it all.

Today, calories don't count, chores don't exist, and demands can't be heard...

Today is my birthday, and there is only room for laughter, joy, love... and presents of course... ;)

Oh, and please don't forget about the cake (thank you Romans for thinking up such a lovely treat).

Gratitude is the Memory of the Heart

We invest our time, energy, hearts, and souls into projects... some don't work out.. but others flourish.

I just wanted to take a moment and say thank you, from the very bottom of my heart, for all of your love and support. It is just the beginning of Tiny Treasures, but I have a wonderful feeling about it: Not only do we already have a marvelous group of contributing members, but we have a gallery of outstanding images. I am humbled and honored that so many talented artists are choosing to participate and display their work. Artistically and creatively crafted, the images that are being posted are great tributes to those small items we hold dear to our hearts.

Speaking of hearts, Valentine's Day is just around the corner. I know, I know... a lot of people cringe when they hear others speaking of what many refer to as the "Card Company" holiday. I understand how "cheesy" such a holiday can seem.

I have friends who are so turned off by this holiday that they purposefully dress in black, watch horror movies, and play drinking games during it. You see, the spirit of Valentine's Day lives within all of us... we just all show it in different ways. I am the type who loves glitter, flowers, shades of red and pink, chocolate truffles, and sweat sentiments. I am more than happy to put on heart shaped earrings, pass out candy and cards, and go out to dinner with my sweetheart (or stay in and watch a movie while snuggling on the couch).

Now, let me explain something: I am someone who believes that you should love those that are special to you everyday. There is no need to create a holiday just to give you the excuse to tell someone that you love and appreciate them and surround them with chocolates and flowers. I tell my sweetie that I love him everyday and I buy him gifts far too often than I probably should.

But... since we have a specific date (February 14) set aside on all of our calenders, why not celebrate it!? Lets bake and decorate cupcakes, give each other heart shaped cards filled with heart shaped confetti, take our honey out for a night on the town, tell those that are dear to us that we love them because we don't tell them nearly enough. Maybe it's the fact that I was born in February that I love Valentine's Day so much... Maybe it's the fact that I love baking and decorating... Maybe it's the fact that red is one of my favorite colors... Maybe it's the fact that I love making people uncomfortable by telling them that I love them...

Whatever it is, I love celebrating Valentine's Day and I would like to leave all of you with a bit of inspiration from some of the contributors at Tiny Treasures. I hope it gets you into the spirit of love and I hope it inspires you to go out and photograph the tiny treasures you see during this lovely holiday...

Tiny: Itsy-bitsy, itty-bitty, little, mini, miniature, petite, teensy, teensy weensy, teeny, wee, yea big...

Treasures: Something one considers especially precious or valuable...

Tiny Treasures is dedicated to the dear items we diligently and delicately dust daily on our shelves… To the items we wear on our fingers and that adorn our necks… To the stuff that we tote around in our pockets and keep safe in our handbags… To the small tokens our grandmothers pass on to our mothers who pass on to us … To the frosted cupcakes and golden foiled wrapped truffles we indulge in... To the little items whose only purpose may be to enchant and delight… To the teeny tiny objects that bring us immeasurable joy…

So to put it simply, this space is for artful photos of small items that make our hearts flutter.

The possibilities are endless. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Knick-knacks, cups, broaches, salt and pepper shakers, journals, diaries, cameras, rings, cupcakes, charms, keys, toys, cake toppers, stuffed animals, mugs, perfume bottles, trinkets, guitar picks, truffles, handmade objects... Are you getting the idea? :)

The image above is of this lovely set of salt and pepper shakers Cory and I stumbled upon. We saw them and knew they were destined to be ours. Not only are we Oregonians (an thus the hippie/tree-hugger vibe is in our DNA) but we also very much love each other and the fact that these two little porcelain things are kissing was just too perfect to ignore.

I have always had a soft spot in my heart for little knick-knacks such as this set of salt and pepper-shakers (Sidenote: I really should come up with names for these little guys (let me know if you have any ideas)). Growing up, my grandmothers on either side of the family were always giving me tiny porcelain figurines, jewelry, small collectibles, charms... all sorts of different things that really served no real purpose but to make me smile. In most cases it is the memory that makes the object valuable.

I want to be able to share these mementos and their stories and see what others find interesting and precious.
